An independent, not-for-profit blood authority that manages the national supply of blood products for all the provinces and territories (excluding Quebec) 
* screen all prospective donors to minimize the potential for transmission of infectious diseases 
* all donated blood undergoes extensive testing for infectious diseases, blood groups and compatibility 
* manages National Public Cord Blood Bank, the stem cell and marrow donor network for Canadian and international bone marrow transplants  
* ensures that Canadian transfusion research and development remains cutting edge 
* works with the Organ and Tissue Donation & Transplantation (OTDT) community to improve national system performance
