Description (Service)

Aims to build stronger communities by raising awareness, educating, and empowering Black community members of all ages, and connecting with allies for reciprocal educational opportunities, with the intention of creating spaces of mutual understanding and respect

HBV: Anti-Racist Book Club

  • provides a safe space for everyone to participate, learn, and practice vulnerability while engaging in conversations about race and society
  • maximum 6 readers per group at a time to allow for meaningful discussion
  • each virtual meeting is 90 minutes, bi-weekly with flexible scheduling, through a virtual platform
  • current groups - Black-Indigenous, People of Colour, non racialized, and Big Thinkers

Halton Black Student Union (HBSU)

  • a forum for Black students, parents, and staff to share common experiences, including concerns about anti-Black racism in the education system, as well as critical conversations about anti-racist solutions
  • provides a safe place to talk about issues and problems that Black students face in and out of school, as well as a space where they can get support to deal with how these issues have impacted them
  • have much-needed conversations about Racialized groups, discuss Black mental health through panel discussions, and give established Black community members the opportunity to educate and inspire HBSU members
