Description (Service)

Halton Environmental Network (HEN) provides climate change education and resources for the Halton community

  • strives to make Halton a region with educated citizens, engaged stakeholders and best practice policies for climate change mitigation, adaptation and environmental sustainability
  • supports and enhances the capacity for local climate action and environmental sustainability across Halton
  • brings together relevant parties to drive change and facilitates communication, cooperation, resources and alignment with Community members, Conservation Authorities, Non-profits, Faith-Based Organizations, Government, and the Educational Sector
  • provides workshops, community educational outreach programs, and waste diversion and mitigation initiatives for organizations, businesses, and at events

Programs

Community Classroom: 

  • developing high-quality modules for online educational opportunities for children and youth on issues of climate change mitigation and adaptation, and environmental sustainability

Greening Sacred Spaces Halton-Peel Chapter: 

  • assists faith communities in creating sustainable and energy-efficient places of worship and educates about ecological issues  

Halton Food: 

  • the goal of Halton Food is to increase awareness of food systems issues and opportunities in Halton Region, and communicate with a common voice to promote action

Halton Green Screens: 

  • environmental film screenings in public venues and schools  

Halton Waste Challenge: 

  • challenge-based program to bring awareness to the amount of garbage produced every day 
  • offered in schools, faith-based organizations, businesses, community centres, senior residences and community groups 

Halton Climate Collective:

  • a group of local organizations focused on collectively transforming the community of Halton into a low-carbon, climate-resilient community
  • Generation Green, a program of the HCC, is a youth-led initiative with the goal of engaging Halton students in climate action leadership, and supporting them in their commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in order to drive change and action in their communities

Oakville Ready:

  • piloting an Oakville neighbourhood extreme weather resiliency hub model using places of worship and other neighbourhood organizations as engagement and care anchors
  • goal is to create an Oakville resiliency hub network that engages diverse community stakeholders to increase community capacity and understanding around how we can work to support each other during extreme weather events
