Volunteers must be over the age of 19 and be able to commit to at least 1 year (144 hours) of volunteer service which includes completing 12 hours per month.
There is an interview and screening process which includes a Police Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening. Following that, volunteers must complete an 8 session training program.

|Duties||Volunteers provide an empathetic, confidential, and non-judgmental telephone support service to callers in accordance with policies and guidelines learned in the training course. |
We do not give advice. Volunteers befriend and listen to callers, provide crisis prevention/intervention and help callers explore alternatives so they may find a solution to their particular situation.

|Benefits||Volunteers will gain personal satisfaction from supporting and befriending others. Volunteers will develop active listening and effective communication skills, learn about social issues and increase their knowledge of community services. Plus we will provide volunteers with a professional letter of reference upon completion of their one year commitment to the Centre. We also offer opportunities to assist with fundraising and community engagement.|
|Clients||People of all ages, economic, and cultural backgrounds call the Distress Line when they need someone to talk to. People may call because they are lonely, feeling overwhelmed, upset or confused, when they are distressed or having thoughts of suicide.|

Volunteers must be reliable in fulfilling shift commitments and attending ongoing training sessions as required. Shifts are 4 hours each.

|Training||Orientation ; Scheduled training ; Training on the job ; Volunteer candidates must attend a Volunteer Information Meeting which includes an interview. If selected, they must complete an 8 week training program, followed by mentoring by experienced volunteers/staff. Ongoing training is provided through workshops and online video courses.|
|Transportation||Volunteers must have access to reliable transportation. Our location is on a bus route.|
|Cost||There is a $50.00 training fee which is used to cover the cost of training materials.|
|Additional Requirements||Police check must include Vulnerable Sector Screening. If within the past 2 to 3 years you’ve been in therapy or have experienced significant stress or trauma in your life, we ask that you wait at least 2 years before applying to volunteer.
