| Comments | The position of Volunteer Literacy Tutor supports the Learning Disabilities Association of Halton-Hamilton's (LDAHH) literacy program for children and youth with reading difficulties, called "Reading Rocks". This literacy program is designed to motivate and help children between the ages of 6-12 years improve their foundational reading skills and gain confidence in reading. It is also designed to help volunteers develop their knowledge and experience in working with children who struggle with reading due to an identified or suspected learning disability. Therefore, the Volunteer Literacy Tutor will work one-on-one with a child for 8 weeks, twice per week, and is responsible for developing and implementing hands-on activities and games to them the foundational literacy skills of phonics, sight words, and fluency that meet their individual literacy needs. In addition, the Literacy Tutor will work with the child to graph their successes in each literacy area so that the child learns self-regulation skills and experiences success that can be seen. | ||

| Duties | Work one-on-one with a child, developing and implementing fun, hands-on activities and games that explicitly teach and reinforce skills in phonics, sight words, and fluency based on the needs of the child. Develop a unique and creative poster board based on the interests of the child where the child's successes are emphasized by graphing their success in the three central program areas (phonics, sight words fluency) after every night of the program. Conduct informal literacy assessment on the first day of program (pre-assessment) as well as on the last day of program (post-assessment) to determine where the child will need the most support and to measure their progress. Provide a positive and safe learning environment Provide regular positive feedback on the student’s progress to instill self‐motivation and self‐confidence in their academic development -Fill out session reports after the tutoring sessions to track the children’s progress -Communicate with the child's parents on their progress and goals -Attend required training sessions as necessary -Where applicable, transports poster boards to and from the program -Responsible for own transportation to and from program location -Complete time sheets -Assist the program facilitator if needed | ||

| Commitment Length | Short Term - 8 weeks ; - Program runs for 8 weeks, twice per week for one hour. 6:30 - 7:30. - Offered in Burlington (Tuesdays and Fridays), Oakville (Mondays and Wednesdays), Milton (Mondays and Wednesdays) and Hamilton (Tuesdays and Thursdays). Must be able to participate on both nights. - There are three 8 week program sessions per year (October, January, and April) - Minimum commitment of two hours per week, for each week that the program is in session, with one hour also being granted outside of the program time to prepare the literacy activities and workstation. - In addition, each volunteer tutor must attend orientation/training during the week prior to program beginning. | ||
