Duties

Inclusion Program Volunteer

Role

Reporting to the Coordinator, Recreation, this part-time volunteer position is responsible for assisting children (ages 6-9 years, with varying abilities) to participate in the Move More Sports for ALL program. This program teaches fundamental movement and sports skills children need to enjoy an active lifestyle.

Time Commitment

  • Various hours; dates based on program schedule
  • Must commit to the program session duration (10 weeks, 45 minute sessions, plus
    set-up and take-down time)

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Assist with set-up and take-down (i.e. sports equipment)
  • Volunteers introduce themselves to the child/youth program participants at the beginning of the first session attended
  • Follow the routines set out by the group facilitators
  • Encourage the participants to participate in the program
  • Assist participants to complete the group activities; such assistance may include: providing physical guidance, verbal prompts or close supervision
  • Allow participants to get the most they can out of group experiences. Assist as needed but do not “do for” the participants, unless necessary
  • Model certain skills or actions for group participants as facilitators request (i.e. kicking a soccer ball, throwing a ball, completing and obstacle course)
  • Volunteers are not expected to assist individuals with personal care, significant behaviours (as outlined in training) or safety concerns. Trained Inclusion Support Workers will be responsible for providing physical prompts or behaviour interventions
  • Volunteers are ambassadors for the Town, and are expected to be accountable for their behavior and role model professionalism at all times

Requirements & Qualifications

  • 16 years of age or older
  • Criminal Record Check (or Vulnerable Sector Screening for 18+)
  • Must meet requirements of the Town of Milton volunteer program
  • Interested/passionate about supporting children with disabilities
  • Comfortable engaging with children with disabilities
  • Experience working with persons with disabilities, an asset
  • Standard First Aid and CPR, an asset
  • Punctual, consistent, reliable
  • Empathetic and caring personality
  • Mature individual with developed problem solving skills
