Start2Finish, Running & Reading Club

The Start2Finish Running & Reading Club is a fun after-school program that encourages literacy, healthy active living, and play. The program runs from October to May one afternoon a week for two hours. Volunteers support students in various fitness and reading activities. As a result, students stay in school, build self-confidence and develop positive friendships with mentors and peers. With mentor Coaches, students discover the possibilities of a brighter future.

Information to highlight:

  • Children in the Running & Reading Club are 6 -13 years old; from grades 1-6
  • You do not have to be a runner to volunteer, there is something for everyone!

Job Summary:

Tutors will provide academic support, guidance, and mentorship to vulnerable youth in the Halton-Mississauga areas, with a focus on improving their knowledge and understanding of Reading, Science, Mathematics, and others. This will be online.

Responsibilities:

  •  Provide one-on-one or small group tutoring sessions to students aged 10-19 years primarily in STEM subjects, reading and others.
  • Assist students in understanding and completing their homework assignments, projects, and preparing for tests and exams.
  • Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages active participation and engagement from students.
  •   Identify individual student learning needs and tailor tutoring strategies accordingly.
  • Develop and implement personalized learning plans based on students' strengths, weaknesses, and goals.
  • Encourage critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity among students through hands-on activities and real-life applications of STEM concepts and reading.
  • Foster a supportive and respectful relationship with students, promoting their confidence and self-esteem in their academic abilities.
  • Collaborate with other tutors, staff, and volunteers to share best practices, resources, and ideas for enhancing the tutoring program.
  • Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions, including student progress, challenges, and areas for improvement.
  • Attend periodic training sessions and staff meetings to enhance tutoring skills and stay updated on program policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to the organization's guidelines, code of conduct, and safeguarding policies to ensure the safety and well-being of the students.

- Shopping for food for our programs.  
- Online ordering of food for our programs.  
- Preparing meals and snacks for students to eat; most programs do not involve cooking, but most have some cutting of fresh fruits and vegetables and minimal preparation of other food items.  
- Setting up for food service which can include setting up chairs and tables, cleaning the eating and food preparation surfaces and putting out dishes and food. 
- Preparing bins with food items to be served.
- Post-program cleanup; this can include doing dishes, putting food away, cleaning tables and putting away chairs.
- Monthly reporting and financial tracking; this involves working with school staff to obtain account balances and submitting totals to HFFT each month.

Position Overview

  • Tutors will read with children in Grades 1- 4

Activities/Tasks:

·  Tutors set up their tutoring location with materials and pick up their student at the classroom or learning area.

·  Supported by the tutor, students will read to the tutor from a selected levelled text. The tutor may read to the student and use various manipulatives to further engage the students in reading strategies and techniques.

· Tutors will use before, during and after reading strategies as outlined in their training.

·   Tutors keep a simple log of student activities.

·   Tutors will follow up on any questions or concerns with their partner, Team Leader or Educational Consultant.

 Duties/Responsibilities: Provide a clear Vulnerable Sector Check check prior to acceptance into the program. Attend all training and orientation sessions, including meetings and workshops. Follow program policies and procedures and instructions specified by the Educational Consultants. Tutors are required to complete program evaluations, maintain confidentiality, and participate in year-end Success Celebrations. Additional duties may be included as assigned by the Director of Educational Programming

Contact expectant and new parents who have signed up for support. Contact as necessary until parent feels confident and connected with other supports. Share own breastfeeding experience when appropriate to assist new parent in feeling comfortable. Volunteers can seek out advice and support as needed from their Volunteer Coordinator, Public Health Nurses and other breastfeeding resources in the community. All work is done from the volunteer's own home.
