The Support House Board of Directors is composed of volunteers who work and/or live in Halton and surrounding communities. The Board is responsible for effective governance and leadership for the organization.

The time commitment required for a director of the Board is approximately 60–70 hours per year. Meetings are held monthly on the last Monday of a month, in the evening, at the Oakville office or virtually.

Preference will be given to candidates who have experience with any of the following:

·        Healthcare (clinical and/or administrative)

·        Lived experience/caregiver of those with mental health and/or addiction

Halton Food for Thought, Student Nutrition Programs

-Shopping for food for our programs. 
-Online ordering of food for our programs. 
-Preparing meals and snacks for students to eat; most programs do not involve cooking, but most have some cutting of fresh fruits and vegetables and minimal preparation of other food items. 
-Setting up for food service which can include setting up chairs and tables, cleaning the eating and food preparation surfaces and putting out dishes and food.  
-Post-program cleanup; this can include doing dishes, putting food away, cleaning tables and putting away chairs. 
-Monthly reporting and financial tracking; this involves working with school staff to obtain account balances and submitting totals to HFFT each month.

  • Start/maintain a local group in your community or campus by recruiting volunteers yourself and welcoming new volunteers recruited by the Public Engagement team (a group should ideally have at a minimum 4 volunteers)
  • Organize monthly Education & Action (E&A) meetings in the first 2 weeks of each month to discuss our monthly calls-to-action
  • Coordinate the logistics of the group (meeting venue, email correspondence, follow up, etc.)
  • Promote and raise awareness and invite individuals to join your group
  • Compile monthly reports on actions taken by your group volunteers and submit them to staff on a monthly basis
  • Communicate regularly with the Provincial Leader and/or Regional Coordinator for guidance and support
  • Ensure happiness, wellbeing, and sustainability of group by encouraging others to take leadership within the group and by organizing social activities
  • Take part in webinars, calls, online discussions and campaigns to take action
  • Lead by example by taking actions (political engagement, media letter-writing, etc.), alongside volunteers and in support of our campaigns
  • Promote volunteers to leadership positions within your group to build a strong team of co-leaders
  • Ensure the sustainability of your group by always having a leadership transition plan in case you need to step down

  •  To provide great customer service and be a customer ambassador.
  • Welcome customers at the main entrance and thank them for supporting your charity and assist with doors
  •  Provide information on games, programs, and promotions, answer questions etc. 
  • Circulate in Cabinet Game area ‐ chat with customers when appropriate.
  • If requested by the operator ‐ assist with promotions –‐ e.g., handing out ballots, prizes.
  • Support approved charity awareness initiatives from your charity ‐ e.g., displays, 
    brochures, giveaways, or gifts. 
  • May also assist with delivery of food and non‐alcoholic beverages return food trays to 
    kitchen area, assist with clean‐up (used bingo paper, etc.) – and assist with call-backs of 
    bingo winners (you will be shown how if this is required).

Our volunteer board of directors meets monthly in Georgetown or Acton (Halton Hills), with additional meetings as deemed necessary for committees and project-oriented activities. Participation at meetings is in-person or through online conferencing when appropriate. Responsibilities of Directors include attending monthly meetings well-prepared to discuss agenda items that are meant to facilitate board decisions about the organization and its operations. Directors are asked to devote an average of 4-8 hours per month to respond to communication, participate at in-park events, participate in the activities of at least one subcommittee and actively extend help to other Directors as and when needed.

Our appointed, volunteer Directors serve a minimum 2-year term and commit approximately 6 to 12 hours per month to Board activities. As a Director your responsibilities will include developing a clear understanding of our mission and mandate; providing financial oversight; and building effective relationships within our service delivery communities to promote literacy and essential skills, and to raise funds in support of organizational financial sustainability.

Victim Assistance Volunteer Program
As required in Halton region (i.e Burlington, Hamilton, Oakville).
Provide practical assistance as needed. Identify longer-term needs by responding to victim's concerns. Supply the victim with appropriate options and referrals to services in the community. Volunteers are on call to the Burlington OPP 24 hours a day. Volunteers are specially trained to provide short term emotional and practical support to victims of tragic circumstances, fatalities, serious personal injury, crime and road trauma.
