As a volunteer you will help the recreation staff run the programming and activities that make the program so much fun. This might be playing games or completing puzzles, assisting with art or music sessions, or simply having a quiet conversation with a client.
Volunteers are always needed for lonely, isolated older adults. One visit per week can bring a lonely older adult a huge sense of worth and happiness. Those who are isolated, often find their recall of daily details is frosted over. A little social contact can melt that ice and bring warmth to you both.
Visits are weekly for as little as one-hour time commitment for an in-home visit or a couple of hours if you care to take them to an activity in which you share an interest such as coffee, shopping, attending an art show, live music, or even go for a walk by the lake. By volunteering, you may also be providing some much-needed support to a caregiver or family member simply by visiting one of our wonderful clients.
Your visit helps maintain and encourage the client's confidence and independence.
Volunteers will assist, organize, lead, & promote interest in a variety of recreation & leisure activities such as arts, crafts, sports, games, music, hobbies and community outings. (depending on the interest of the people we support)
Duties may include:
- Interpret group & individual interests, likes & dislikes
- Adapt activities to meet participants' needs
- Greet new arrivals to activities, introduce them to other participants, & encourage their participation
- Help set up related decorations & equipment
- Encourage participants to develop their own activities and leadership skills through group discussions
- Have fun
