Job Summary:

What is the Turkey Drive? 

Turkey Drive is our annual “turkey-raiser” for Food for Life, where we ask customers at local Fortinos stores to purchase a turkey and donate it to a family in need in Halton for the holiday season. Customers purchase a turkey (pay for it at the front cash) and then let the cashier know it is for the Turkey Drive. Our volunteers will help make the ask to the customer as well as help collect the turkeys at the cash. Food for Life will deliver the turkeys throughout the community in time for the holidays. 

When is the Turkey Drive? 

The Turkey Drive is held over 2 days in December. This year our Turkey Drive is taking place: 

  • Saturday December 2 – 10:00am-4:00pm 
  • Sunday December 3 – 10:00am-4:00pm 

Volunteer Needs 

Volunteer shifts are approximately 3 hours long - 9:45am-1:00pm; 12:45-4:00pm. Volunteers will fulfill the following roles in stores:

Meat Department Role Asking shoppers if they would like to purchase a turkey and donate it to a family this holiday. Let them know we are collecting for our annual Turkey Drive, and please consider purchasing and donating a turkey to a family in need.   Front Cash Role At the front cash, they will be helping to collect the purchased turkeys in a cart and thank the shoppers for their donation. They will have a Turkey Count sheet to help track the number of donated turkeys. The Front cash volunteers will also help to transfer donated turkeys (by shopping cart) to the freezer, where they will be picked up by our drivers throughout the day.

As a CityKidz Food Preparation Team Member, you will have the opportunity to work in a team of up to 5 to organize, sort, and prepare meals for every child that attends CityKidz on a Saturday. In this role, you will have the opportunity to further develop your skills with teamwork and organization, as well as being quick on your feet.  

During your shift at CityKidz as a Food Preparation Team Member, you will be 1 of 5 team members to assist in following the meal plan for that shift, making sure each lunch bag has been filled correctly with no items missing. Once the lunch bags have been filled correctly and children are arriving, You, along with your team members, will go into the CityKidz theatre and start handing out meals. It is you and your team that must ensure each child gets a meal. 

Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Provide nutritious meals to each child attending a Saturday program by following the meal plan. 

  • To work efficiently to ensure meals are prepared before children begin arriving at CityKidz. 

  • To display love as you work as a team to hand out meals to each child attending.

During your shift on a Saturday, you will be in charge of welcoming volunteers and getting them to where they need to be. It is essential in this role to have a friendly and engaging personality, as you will be providing hospitality to each of our volunteers.


As a welcome team member, you play a crucial role as you actively live out the mission of CityKidz. Through your words and actions, when you welcome volunteers into the building, you are constantly creating inspirational experiences and developing nurturing personal relationships. As you do this, you equip other volunteers to do the same as they serve in their various roles!


Primary Responsibilities:
• To greet and sign in volunteers through TAM system (Check-in/ Check-out system).
• Ensure paper copies of attendance are being filled out as volunteers arrive.
• To welcome new volunteers for their first shift, providing them with a welcome package, their name tag and any additional information needed for the day.
• To ensure new volunteers know where to go for their shift, whatever their role is, by bringing them over to their team and introducing them to each other.

Milton Speed Skating Club

There are several roles to fill:

1)      Rink Side Assistants. Lots of walking 3 positions to fill – Jobs may include:

2)      Runner for the Clerk. Tasked with finding skaters who are not in position prior to the race. Someone with a fast response to run to dressing rooms and call names. 1 Volunteer

3)      Water Buckets. Fill and lift water buckets and maintain a clean area. Lots of repetitive lifting. 2 Volunteer

4)      Runner for skate guards. As skaters get on the ice, they remove skater guards, sweaters, etc. These need to be transferred to the location where the skaters get off the ice. Lots of walking.  4 Volunteers.

5)      Hospitality room servers. Two possible roles; general room help prepping and maintaining the hospitality room. We may also require food servers during lunch (this role will be a 3 hour posting mid-day).  2 Volunteers

7)      Timers/Line Judge. For more mature volunteers who have a lot of focus. These are the official positions of timer (using stop watch to time skaters) and line judge – determining who came across the finish line first/second/third.

8)      Track Steward. Maintain the ice surface and blocks during the event. On the ice position on skates all day; Will train.

9)      Event Photographer. If you have a camera we could use you.

10)     Social Media Coordinator. Keep the WhatsApp up to date; Post event photos to Facebook and/or Instagram.

11)   Friday Night setup. Help put equipment out on the ice and hospitality room. 9pm-Midnight

Volunteers are to walk through the lighting displays and visually inspect them for any malfunctioning and/or damaged displays.  
 
Proper footwear (the lights are set up on a field) and a cellphone should be brought for your trip to Spencer Smith Park. For any malfunctioning displays, we ask that you take pictures to later provide to the Coordinator. The night of or morning after the walk through, volunteers are expected to email the coordinator with an update on the park, inclusive of pictures if applicable.

We are currently seeking Congregate Dining Assistant volunteers to serve food and beverages to a group of seniors to encourage nutrition, socialization, and enjoyment of the group activity. The role includes setting up tables, serving food and beverages to anywhere from 8-30 seniors at a time, clearing and cleaning the tables, washing the dishes and conversing with the seniors in a friendly manner.  

  • Maintain a safe and healthy work environment.

    • Use sanitization practices such as recommended hand washing and food serving guidelines.

We are looking for a small diverse team to accompany our team members providing information, resources and educational, hands-on activities at our Burlington Beach Eco Hub and other locations, primarily in late Spring, Summer, and early Fall.

This opportunity is suitable for adults of all ages, and for post-secondary and older high school students with communication skills, lots of energy, reliability, passion for the environment, responsibility and a willingness to learn. Formal related experience or education is not required.

If you are selected for this opportunity, we will ask you to commit to a schedule of weekday and/or weekend shifts for a two month period. Training will be provided.

Duties may include:

  • Set up and take down of outreach table/supplies and eco-activity materials

  • Being a friendly and helpful ambassador for BurlingtonGreen, providing awareness and eco-action information to members of the public

Homework Club takes place at a number of elementary schools across the Halton and Hamilton Regions. In the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 School Years, Homework Club has run entirely virtually on Zoom. Fall 2022 brought back in-person programs, with a limited amount of virtual (zoom) spots as well. For the 2023-24 school year, we will be almost all in-person with extremely limited virtual spots, giving priority to returning mentors for the virtual spots.

·         full days sessions (40 hours/week, Mon-Fri, 8:30am – 4:30pm)

All nine (9) weeks of July and August are available to volunteer for.  Volunteers at our summer day camps may have any of the following responsibilities:

·         Assisting staff with coaching and supervising children at camp

·         Equipment collection and maintenance (ie. inflating soccer balls, collecting cones)

·         General help around camp

·         Maintain a clean camp environment and help staff meet all safety protocols

·         Adhere to and help enforce all camp policies

Qualities we’re looking for:  

·         Enjoys soccer and sporting activities

·         Great with children (ages 5 to 13 years)

·         Energetic and enthusiastic

·         Responsible and reliable

Eligibility:  Volunteers at our camp must be at least 14 years of age by the time their camp week of volunteering starts.  If you are 16 or older, you may be eligible for a CIT (Counsellor in Training) or Camp Counsellor position with us. Any volunteers aged 18 or older will be required to submit a police background check. There are a limited number of volunteering spots available at each camp location.

The gentleman does not have family that lives in the area and speaks extremely limited English. Friendly visits are aimed at decreasing his social isolation and helping him engage in the community. Training will be provided, and ongoing staff support will be available. Flexible schedule to suit your needs, 30min 2x/week, or 1hr 1x/week. In person visits are preferable and will take place in a public area in the client's apartment or a mutually agreed upon location in his area of Locke & York Blvd, Hamilton.
