Visitor Services Volunteers are key members of the front of house team and serve as ambassadors of Oakville Galleries through their regular contact with members of the public at our location at Centennial Square (120 Navy Street, Oakville). They are trained volunteers interested in leading groups of visitors of all ages through the current exhibitions, opening conversations, and expanding the visitors’ experience with an appreciation for art. They ensure that visitors are informed of upcoming exhibitions, workshops and special programs, and OG membership benefits.

Ideal Candidates Should:

  • Have a strong interest in art and some familiarity with modern and contemporary art history
  • Are comfortable leading exhibition tours, providing information about the work of the contemporary artists, and facilitating discussions about current exhibitions to members of the public  
  • Have strong English verbal and written communication skills 
  • Have a warm and positive attitude
  • Be responsible, hard-working, and enthusiastic  
  • Be 21 years of age or older 
  • Be committed to one day of volunteering per week for either a 6 or 12 month volunteer term
  • Be willing to provide a background check through your local police station      

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Visitor Services and Tours

  • Greet visitors and introduce them to Oakville Galleries’ exhibitions and programs
  • Initiate discussions about and lead tours of the exhibitions on view
  • Provide information for Oakville Galleries' educational and public programs
  • Promote Oakville Galleries membership programs                                                                                     
  • Maintain attendance records and complete daily task checklist
  • Open and close the gallery spaces on time
  • Provide assistance to internal departments as needed
  • Attend necessary training and planning meetings

Artwork & Facility Security

  • Ensure all works on view are safe and secure
  • Monitor visitors to the gallery and advise visitors of gallery policies when necessary
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the gallery space and report any issues to the Exhibition & Collection Managers
  • Track the condition of works on view and report any damages or conservation issues immediately to the Exhibition & Collection Manager
  • Prepare incident reports for and communicate security issues to the Deputy Director



Adult Learning Centre, Georgetown - Head Office, Essential Skills for Employment

Conduct lessons using course resources provided; small group tutoring for basic computer skills, 8 weeks per session. Communicate with staff and attend mandatory training workshop.

Tutors meet with learners for a minimum of three hours per week. Tutoring schedules depend on volunteer and learner availability.   Volunteers are matched with learners based on availability, subject area and location. 

Currently looking for Oakville and Burlington tutors for daytime classes (930AM-1230PM).

  1. Program Oversight:

    • Collaborate with CDL staff to ensure the smooth execution of programs.
    • Monitor and report on program outcomes and participant feedback.
    • Work closely with program facilitators to maintain safe staff-to-child ratios during activities and events.
    • Help implement safety protocols and emergency procedures as needed.
  2. Community Outreach:

    • Act as an ambassador for CDL by attending events and engaging with the community to promote our programs and essential services.
    • Share information about CDL's mission and impact with potential participants, donors, and partners.

If you enjoy speaking with the community, working outdoors, and helping out with a variety of tasks then this may be the perfect volunteer opportunity you’ve been looking for! 

We are looking for a small diverse team to accompany our team members providing information, resources and educational, hands-on activities at our Burlington Beach Eco Hub and other locations, primarily in late Spring, Summer, and early Fall.

This opportunity is suitable for adults of all ages, and for post-secondary and older high school students with communication skills, lots of energy, reliability, passion for the environment, responsibility and a willingness to learn. Formal related experience or education is not required.

If you are selected for this opportunity, we will ask you to commit to a schedule of weekday and/or weekend shifts for a two month period. Training will be provided.

Duties may include:

  • Set up and take down of outreach table/supplies and eco-activity materials

  • Being a friendly and helpful ambassador for BurlingtonGreen, providing awareness and eco-action information to members of the public

  • Leading and/or co-leading eco-actions with diverse community member of all ages

  • Referring questions to staff members or other volunteers as needed

  • Maintain confidentiality as needed

  • Other duties as needed

You will be paired with someone who has immigrated to the GTA and has experience and/or training in their industry, but who may not understand the Canadian context of their profession, workplace culture, or know how to translate their skill sets. 
 
As a mentor, you may help your mentee by doing the following: 
• Giving practical advice on how to navigate a job search in the GTA 
• Supporting them to grow their professional networks, connecting them to your contacts where appropriate 
• Advising on recommended training and career development 
• Helping them deal with questions and issues that may arise in the early stages of employment.
