Lineage Societies

Formal, organized groups of people who trace their ancestry from a common ancestor. Many of these societies have expanded the concept to encompass descent from a group of people, such as those aboard a particular ship, those who served in a particular war, or those engaged in any of a wide range of activities. The societies include individuals descended from the first settlers in a particular province or region, early founders of religious groups, veterans of wars and military campaigns, descendants of a ethnocultural group, descendants of a common progenitor and descendants from royalty or important historical figures. United Empire Loyalists of Canada is an example of a Canadian lineage society.
